Kate Beaton's latest book is a graphic memoir of her time working in Alberta's oil sands
The cartoonist tells Tom Power about her story and why she wanted to write a memoir this time around
Kate Beaton is one of the most beloved cartoonists in North America, known for her historical comics Hark! A Vagrant and Step Aside, Pops. What many don't know is that before her rise to the top of bestseller lists, she drew her earliest comics while working in Alberta's oil sands.
Those comics later became her acclaimed graphic memoir, Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands. Since then, the book has been named not only one of Barack Obama's favourite books of 2022, but also the winner of Canada Reads 2023.
Beaton stopped by to tell us about her reaction to the former U.S. president's endorsement, and why she says she has the world's best fans.
