FIFA World Cup: Uruguay 1, Italy 0

Uruguay booked its spot in the Round of 16 with a 1-0 victory over 10-man Italy in an incident-filled final Group D match at the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday.

Captain Diego Godín scored the winner in the 81st minute on a header off a corner kick. 

Claudio Marchisio was given a straight red card in the 59th minute for a high tackle, forcing an already defensive Italy to hunker down in an attempt to force the draw, a scenario that would've saw the side through to the next round. 

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez may be in big trouble though, after it appeared that he bit defender Giorgio Chiellini in the late stages of the match.

Godín’s header killed Italian World Cup dreams and sent Uruguay into a frenzy. The fact that it came mere minutes after the Suarez-Chiellini incident only adds insult to Azzurri's injury.

Gianluigi Buffon. The Italian keeper did everything he could to keep Italy in the World Cup, making several great stops, but it wasn’t enough.

"The red for Marchisio and not sending off Suarez were ridiculous," Giorgio Chiellini said. "It was absolutely clear. There's even a mark," Chiellini said of the bite.

"The referee probably didn't see it," said Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez. "For me, and for all the people in Uruguay, we had more important things."

Amid heavy criticism, Suarez, who's been suspended twice in prior biting infractions defended his actions against Chiellini.

Claudio Marchisio was the first Italian to be sent off at the World Cup since 2006, when headbutt victim Marco Materazzi was red-carded against Australia in the Round of 16.

Italy’s World Cup has come to an end, and coach Cesare Prandelli has resigned. Though the Italians will feel aggrieved, you’d be hard-pressed to say that they did enough to secure progression in this match. The Azzurri fell into an old habit, sitting back and playing for a draw, and it burned them. With many old stalwarts getting on in age, you have to wonder what this side will look like heading into Euro 2016.
