Euro 2016: Iceland own-goal saves Hungary from upset loss
Belgium easily tops Ireland, Portugal held to draw by Austria
Birkir Saevarsson scored a late own-goal to hand Hungary a 1-1 draw with Iceland on Saturday in another European Championship match affected by crowd trouble.
Saevarsson turned a cross from Nemanja Nikolic into his own net as Iceland was headed for its first victory at a major tournament.
"We were so close," said Iceland forward Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, who was named man of the match. "It's quite a big loss for us, this draw."
As Hungary's players celebrated the 88th-minute equalizer, Hungarian fans threw flares which landed on the field and among nearby police officers. Several loud bangs were heard and there was a cloud of smoke, delaying the restart.
Iceland took the lead in the 40th minute when Gylfi Sigurdsson scored from the penalty spot, hitting the ball low and hard to veteran goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly's right.
The penalty followed a chaotic scramble in the area after Kiraly caught, then dropped, a cross from Johann Gudmundsson. In the ensuing melee, Russian referee Sergei Karasev ruled that defender Tamas Kadar had fouled Aron Gunnarsson.
Hungary pushed hard to level the game in the second half, but poor shooting meant the team's overwhelming advantage in possession was wasted.
It was Iceland's second straight 1-1 draw, but the players collapsed in despair on the field after the final whistle, a far cry from the jubilation that greeted the draw with Portugal four days earlier.
"We should have kept calm and played the ball more," Sigthorsson said. "When we got the ball we weren't calm enough."
Portugal held winless by Austria
Cristiano Ronaldo missed a late penalty Saturday as his team was held to a 0-0 draw by Austria, keeping Portugal winless after two matches at the European Championship.
After being hauled down by Martin Hinteregger, Ronaldo sent Austria goalkeeper Robert Almer the wrong way but his 79th-minute penalty kick hit the post.
The miss summed up a frustrating night in front of goal for the Portugal captain at the Parc des Princes.
Although he did find the net with a header in the 85th, it was ruled out for offside.
Ronaldo was making his record 128th appearance for Portugal's national team.
Portugal has only two points in Group F, while Austria collected its first point.
Lukaku double helps Belgium beat Ireland
Romelu Lukaku's second-half double and a goal from Axel Witsel saw Belgium beat Ireland 3-0 at the European Championships in Bordeaux, France.
Lukaku opened the scoring in the 48th minute from a quick counterattack that owed much to Kevin De Bruyne. Lukaku struck the ball viciously past the Ireland goalkeeper from just outside the area.
Witsel doubled the score in the 61st, when he jumped above Ireland midfielder James McCarthy to head the ball home.
Lukaku's second goal came in the 70th after another swift Belgian move. Eden Hazard set up an unmarked Lukaku in the penalty area, who slotted home from close range.
The result was a fair illustration of Belgium's dominance in the match.
It was also a welcome return to form by the Red Devils following after a disappointing first match in Group E against Italy, which it lost 2-0.
