Russia continues cleaning up in synchro, wins 5th gold at aquatics worlds
Canadians Jacqueline Simoneau and Claudia Holzner finish 7th in duet free
Svetlana Kolesnichenko claimed her fourth gold medal of the championships by winning the duet free routine in synchronized swimming with Alexandra Patskevich.
It was Russia's fifth gold in six synchronized swimming finals this week.
"All our attempts weren't in vain. We did everything we possibly could. We were training for 10-to-12 hours a day," Kolesnichenko said.
The pair was awarded 97.0000 points for Russia's sixth gold in Budapest and its sixth win in six attempts in the event at the worlds.
The Canadian duo of Jacqueline Simoneau and Claudia Holzner finished in seventh place, exactly eight points behind the Russians.
When asked to describe their performance, Simoneau called it "epic."
Coming within four points of a podium finish leaves the duo confident in their future.
"We surprised a lot of people here. The routines we swam here are the ones I used to swim with Karine," said Simoneau, referring to her now retired ex-duet partner Karine Thomas. "As a pair, Claudia and I have different strengths than those I had with Karine. If we're able to come in here, after five weeks of training together, and get a score of 89 with a routine that was not choreographed for us, I can't wait to see what we'll do with a routine that is tailor-made for our strengths."
Chinese twins Jiang Tingting and Jiang Wenwen took silver, while Anna Voloshyna and Yelyzaveta Yakhno of Ukraine got bronze.
