Andre De Grasse wins final race before Olympics

Competing in an American Track League event in Houston, Andre De Grasse beat out former world record-holder Asafa Powell, of Jamaica, over 100 metres. The 21-year-old Markham, Ont., sprinter raced to a 10.02 second result into a 0.3 metres-per-second head wind.

Andre De Grasse won his final race before heading to Rio de Janeiro for the Olympics Games.

Competing in an American Track League event in Houston on Saturday, De Grasse beat out former world record-holder Asafa Powell over 100 metres. The 21-year-old Markham, Ont., sprinter raced to a 10.02 second result into a 0.3 metres-per-second head wind.

Powell finished second in 10.08 and his Jamaican compatriot Dexter Lee finished third in 10.14.

De Grasse, who recently defended his national 100m title, will race the event as well as the 200m and 4x100m relay at the upcoming Games. It will be his first Olympics after a breakout season last summer which saw him win bronze at the world championships.


Theisen-Eaton tunes up hurdles

Brianne Theisen-Eaton also competed in Houston, racing the 100m hurdles. The heptathlete finished fourth in 13.04. Sharika Nelvis of the United States won with a 12.83 performance.

The Humboldt, Sask., native will compete in the heptathlon at the Olympics. She finished silver in the event at the 2015 world championships.

Chanice Taylor-Chase and Noelle Montcalm finished first and second in the 400m hurdles, racing to 55.55 and 56.40 finishes, respectively. Both will compete in Rio.
