Canada's synchronized swimming duet of Karine Thomas and Jacqueline Simoneau sit in seventh place after their first of two routines at Rio 2016, in solid position to likely move on to the finals.

The duo posted a score of 90.06 in their free routine, the seventh-highest score among 24 teams competing at the Olympics.

Russia leads again

Canada was once considered a powerhouse in the sport, but in recent years the Russian team has come to dominate, winning gold in Sydney, Athens, Beijing and London.

The Russian team delivered on those lofty expectations in their first swim, with two-time Olympic champions Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romachina delivering an almost flawless performance for a score of 98.06.

They were followed by the Chinese team with a score of 96.06 and the Japanese team at 94.04.
