Tiger-Cats give Toronto permission to interview defensive co-ordinator

Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive co-ordinator Greg Marshall appears to be in the running to fill the head-coaching vacancy of the team's longtime rival.

The Toronto Star, citing unnamed sources, is reporting that the Ticats have given Toronto permission to interview Marshall after Montreal Alouettes offensive co-ordinator Scott Milanovich turned down the Argonauts' offer on the weekend.

Marshall is also said to be in the running for the head-coaching job in Winnipeg, where he spent three seasons as defensive co-ordinator and linebackers coach.

Over the past 16 years, Marshall has also overseen the defence with Saskatchewan, Edmonton and the Ottawa Renegades.

He spent nine years in the league as a defensive lineman before launching his coaching career.

In 2005, Marshall interviewed for the Blue Bombers' head coaching job, but the position went to Doug Berry, who has also been linked to the Argos coaching search.

Berry's agent says he hasn't talked with the team this week.

"Nothing that I'm aware of is happening," said Gil Scott. "At this point, I don't think there's anything going on because of the [CFL board of governors] meetings in Florida [starting Wednesday].

It's believed Toronto was rebuffed in its attempts to interview Alouettes defensive co-ordinator Tim Burke.

In other CFL news, Montreal has released Davis Sanchez as part of an agreement the cornerback reached when he signed a new contract last off-season.

The 35-year-old had a solid 2009 campaign, posting 24 defensive tackles and two interceptions.

A Vancouver native, Sanchez has had three stints with the Alouettes. He has also played for Calgary, Edmonton and the San Diego Chargers of the National Football League.

Sanchez still could return to Montreal but will explore his options leading up to the start of CFL free agency on Feb. 16.
