Canadian Athlete of the Weekend: Christine Nesbitt

Christine Nesbitt has been on a tear since the long-track World Cup speed skating season started, and this past weekend was no different, winning both gold and silver medals and earning the nod as our Canadian Athlete of the Weekend.

The London, Ont. native showed her mettle to capture gold on Sunday — against the very same skater who denied her the top spot on the podium a day before.

"I was in the last pair with [American] Heather Richardson, who won the previous two 1,000's of the season. So I knew that she was going to be fast and she's been skating well," Nesbitt said on Sunday. "But I felt this week that things have been coming together more and more in my own skating. So I was kind of excited.

"[Richardson] was pretty far ahead with one lap to go, but I dug really deep in the last back-straightaway and I didn't let her out of my sight. I felt like I went out for the hunt and I got her at the line, which is a really nice feeling."

Nesbitt now has six medals this season, including four gold, one silver and one bronze.

• Dominique Maltais (Petite-Rivière-Saint-François, Que.) started the defence of her snowboard cross World Cup title with a win in Montafon, Austria.
• Tessa Virtue (London, Ont.) and Scott Moir (Ilderton, Ont.) took silver in ice dance at the Grand Prix Final in Sochi, Russia.
• Patrick Chan (Toronto) was also on the podium at the Grand Prix Final, winning bronze in the men's division.
• Kaillie Humphries (Calgary) won her seventh-straight two-man bobsleigh World Cup race, picking up the win with brakeman Chelsea Valois (Zenon Park, Sask.) in Winterberg, Germany.
• Lyndon Rush (Humboldt, Sask.) and Jesse Lumsden (Edmonton) took bronze in the men's bobsleigh event.
• Canada's sledge hockey team fell to the United States in the final, but secured a silver medal in Calgary.
• Charles Hamelin (Sainte-Julie, Que.) won his first World Cup gold of the season in short-track speed skating, taking top spot on the podium in Shanghai, China.
• Marianne St. Gelais (Sainte-Felicien, Que.) was at that same World Cup stop with Hamelin, where she skated to a bronze in the 500-metre event.
• Guillaume Bastille (Riviere-du-Loup, Que.) won bronze in the 500-metre speed skating event in Shangai. 
• Denny Morrison (Fort St. John, B.C.) and Gilmore Junio (Calgary) both took home speed skating silver medals in Nagano, Japan.
• Christine Sinclair (Burnaby, B.C.) was in Halifax when she was named CBCSports.ca People's Pick Canadian Athlete of the Year on Sunday.
