Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis has undergone surgery on his left shoulder and will be sidelined 16 to 20 weeks.

Toronto said Travis was operated on Tuesday to treat a condition in which one of the four growth plates of the acromion bone, which extends over the shoulder joint, fails to fuse and causes an extra bone.

The condition was discovered when Travis was placed on the disabled list this season with shoulder inflammation. Toronto said the condition, known as os acromiale, did not contribute to the injury.

The procedure included inserting screws to stabilize the extra bone in his shoulder. Travis was placed on the disabled list twice last season with left shoulder inflammation and didn't play after July 28.

He had exploratory surgery on Sept. 23, and the team said at the time that nothing significant was discovered.
