Stella Meghie's chase for creativity led her to filmmaking.

The Canadian director was in New York working in fashion and beauty PR when it hit her that she wanted to do something different in her life. "It just wasn't as creative as I wanted it to be," Meghie remembers. "So I decided to take a chance and quit, and go back to school."

Fast forward to this year and Meghie has put out her debut feature film, Jean of the Joneses, and is already wrapping up a second one, Everything Everything.

Jean of the Joneses is about a dysfunctional Jamaican-American family in Brooklyn and it takes inspiration from Meghie's own family. "I took such a confidence out of it," Meghie says, of making her first film. "It was just affirming, I just knew it was for me."
