Warren Beatty's new film is about Howard Hughes but it's not a biopic

Warren Beatty has never met Howard Hughes, but he did once stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel at the same time as him. In fact, when Beatty inquired about the potential of paparazzi being around, the hotel assured that they were there for the famous Hollywood producer and that, in fact, he had seven suites booked.

"That's grounds for a farce," Beatty remembers. "I've always found him an interesting character that represents so well, yes, the assets of great inherited wealth but there are a lot of liabilities to it." 

Beatty's new film about Hughes, Rules Don't Apply, explores all these ideas and themes — but don't call it a biopic. 

"It's very important to accept the fact that, if you make a movie about somebody that lived, it is a fiction," Beatty clarifies. "You scrunch up chronologies, you move characters around and almost always, you create other characters that are composites of people who could have been related to that person."
