Q

Can I ♥ NY's Milton Glaser rebrand climate change?

Legendary graphic designer Milton Glaser addresses criticism of his "It's not warming. It's dying." campaign.

If there's anyone who knows how to grab the attention of a preoccupied populace, it's Milton Glaser

The legendary graphic designer has created several classic logos -- I ♥ NY, DC Comics, Brooklyn Brewery -- and has crafted eye-popping illustrations for Bob Dylan's greatest hits album and the 7th season of Mad Men, to name only a few portfolio highlights.

But his latest project would push the limits of any creative mind. These days, Glaser is attempting to re-brand the environmental movement.

Glaser joins Jian to discuss his controversial design -- an image of a dark circle, paired with the slogan, "It's not warming, it's dying." -- and how he responds to critics who call the campaign overly simplistic and even imprecise.

Campaign not meant to be fatalistic

In response to critics who say the campaign is too pessimistic, Glaser says there's a difference between saying the world is dying and saying it's dead.

"The affirmative part of it is that there's a little green glow still left, it's not all black." "If we act now, that glow can expand ... you see a little bit of light at the bottom of the button."

See Milton Glaser's design above and tell us: how would you convey the urgency of climate change in 5 words? Do you think such straightforward messages are striking, or reductive?
