Mumford & Sons take a South African sojourn with Baaba Maal
Mumford & Sons first reeled in fans as folk-rock traditionalists — complete with beards, banjos and suspenders. But the kick drum soon gave way to synths and electric indie rock.
Now the British band's knack for musical adventure continues with a new collaboration, Johannesburg, recorded earlier this year in the South African city.
Today bandmates Marcus Mumford, Winston Marshall and recent collaborator Baaba Maal join Shad to discuss their cross-culture collaboration. Mumford & Sons is currently touring North America with the Senegalese singer.
"This is a very good opportunity for African music," says Maal, adding that collaborations like this one bring more global attention to music from the region. "It's also something coming from the heart."
