Gabe Polsky's 'Red Army' revisits cold war of hockey
Polsky's new doc is a fascinating look at the powerhouse Soviet hockey teams of the 1980s.
Filmmaker Gabe Polsky joins Jian to discuss his documentary Red Army -- a fascinating look at the powerhouse Soviet hockey teams of the 1980s and the parallel Cold War they fought on the hockey rink. The film was met with rave reviews at Cannes, and is now screening as part of the Toronto International Film Festival.
Polsky notes that even fervent fans of that era may know nothing of the Soviet side of the story.
The beauty of their game, which the director compares to "jazz on ice", stands in stark contrast to their brutal but effective training regimen.
"They were basically soldiers," he says of the famously disciplined team. "They got to see their families maybe a month out of the year."
