Serial: This American Life's first spin-off explores murder case
Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder discuss their new podcast about a Baltimore murder in 1999.
This American Life producers Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder join guest host Piya Chattopadhyay to discuss the wildly popular radio show's first spinoff, Serial. The masterfully crafted podcast tells one story over the course of an entire season; specifically, the lasting repercussions of Baltimore murder that happened in 1999.
Koenig and Snyder reflect on the popularity of serial (versus episodic) storytelling, why they were drawn to this particular murder case, and the challenges of telling a story as it's unfolding.
"I think the good part of that is that it's making me extra careful because I can't make any assumptions about where it's going to go," says Koenig, host of Serial.
