Royal Wood lights up Q with The Burning Bright
Jian speaks with Juno-nominated pop singer/songwriter Royal Wood in Studio Q today. Wood performed songs from his latest album The Burning Bright, and spoke about a recent period of creative rediscovery that took him to a cabin in Ireland that was cut off from phone lines, TV and the internet.
"The reason I called the album The Burning Bright is because I couldn't avoid leaving and going [to Ireland]. I just felt like this moth, certainly driven towards a flame, and it doesn't avoid it, its every impulse is pulling it. And when I got there, it was definitely everything I needed it to be," he said.
Wood also admitted that as an artist he didn't like playing his songs from his Juno-nominated album We Were Born to Glory because he felt he had written radio-friendly hits for commercial reasons rather than for himself.
With The Burning Bright, he said, he's "returning to the way I used to write as a kid."
