Q Essay: Stopping 'killer robots' could be Canada's legacy
Stephen Harper is being urged to take a global lead in demanding a ban on autonomous weapons.
Jian talks about Mines Action Canada's calls for the government of Stephen Harper to lead a chorus of international condemnation against "killer robots," or autonomous weapons.
This is no joke, Jian says, as 50 NGOs worldwide have already joined the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots.
Jian recalls that Canada was a key force in the battle against landmines in the 1990s. Might the Harper government step up this time to push for a new international treaty banning autonomous weapons at a UN meeting next month in Geneva?
"Could it be a key legacy item for the Prime Minister?" Jian asks.
"Would it be a Lester B. Pearosn moment?"
