Jean-Michel Blais bridges classical and indie music
Montreal pianist Jean-Michel Blais performs from his debut album "Il".
Classical pianist Jean-Michel Blais could have recorded his debut album in a gleaming cathedral — but he chose the comforts of his Montreal apartment, noise and all. Such indie sensibilities set him apart from his contemporaries.
With the hands of a classical pianist and the heart of a punk, Blais believes that indie music could be more technically savvy, and classical music could be less stuffy.
His debut album II, which combines virtuosic techniques with unconventional recording methods, proves it's possible to blend both worlds — and quite beautifully.
Blais performs live in studio q on a Steinway grand piano once used regularly by the great Glenn Gould.
