Were The Handmaid's Tale and Saturday Night Live's big Emmy wins a result of our political climate?
The Emmy Awards took place last night in Los Angeles, hosted by late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert. The show was heavy on political references, as Colbert wasn't afraid to take aim at President Donald Trump, from his past complaints about losing at the Emmys to crowd sizes, which included a guest appearance from Sean Spicer himself.
The Handmaid's Tale, the TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood's famous novel, was among the big winners, taking home awards for lead actress in a drama series (Elisabeth Moss), outstanding supporting actress in a drama series (Ann Dowd), and outstanding drama series. Saturday Night Live, which tied for most nominations this year alongside HBO's Westworld, also won big with Alec Baldwin winning outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for his portrayal of Donald Trump and cast member Kate McKinnon winning outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for a second year in a row, notably for playing Hillary Clinton on this past season of SNL.
Today, the q screen panel, featuring Amanda Joy and John Semley, takes a look at the big winners and moments from the awards show.
