Alan Alda is a seven-time Emmy winner known for his portrayal of Dr. Hawkeye Pierce on M*A*S*H, as well as an Oscar-nominated actor who has appeared on TV shows like The West Wing. But in recent years, Alda has also been delving into his fascination with science.

For over a decade, he hosted Scientific American Frontiers, where he interviewed scientists about their research.
Out of that grew a fascination with communication and how we can all better understand one another. He's even set up an institute for this: the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Scientists at Stony Brook University in New York.

Alda explores these themes in his new book, If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on my Face?

Tom Power talked to Alda in the q studio about his fascination with science and how it leads him to try to help people communicate and relate through empathy.
