This week, kayaker Mary Maley had her 172-kilometre solo trip from Ketchikan to Petersburg in Alaska cut short after a brush with wildlife.

A bear approached Maley's camp near Berg Bay, and took an interest in her main mode of transportation — her kayak.

Maley pleaded with the bear not to eat her kayak, but the animal didn't listen and chewed up the boat.

Maley filmed the exchange, and posted it online.

After retrieving the kayak, Maley says she swam to a boat anchored in the bay nearby, and managed to hitch a ride to Wrangell, Alaska.
