On its website, the University of Michigan-based Undocumented Migration Project describes itself as "a long-term anthropological study of undocumented migration between Mexico and the United States that uses ethnography, archaeology, and forensic science to better understand this clandestine social process".

The project's State of Exception art exhibit tells the tale of this migration by presenting items left in the desert by undocumented people on their journey into the U.S. The State of Exception exhibit is at the University of Michigan until March 12.
