California 911 CPR call

Last Tuesday, an 87-year-old woman lost consciousness at an assisted living facility in Bakersfield, California, where she lived. Someone called 911, but staff at the home refused EMS pleas to perform CPR, saying that they were forbidden by company policy.  Emergency medical staff did arrive, and transported Lorraine Bayless to hospital. She died.  The home has a policy to "immediately call emergency medical personnel for assistance, and to wait for the individual needing attention until such personnel arrives. That is the protocol.. followed."

Advocates for the elderly say the call shows the need to regulate the retirement home industry.  Bakersfield police are investigating, but have not found any criminal wrongdoing. Lorraine Bayless's daughter says she is satisfied with the way that the home handled her mother's situation.
