International enrolment is down by close to nine per cent this year at the University of Calgary. The school estimates it will lose $11 million in revenue this year alone, and points to federal changes and geopolitics as the cause. But aside from the financial impact, advocates say the loss of international students will also hurt the ability to conduct research on campuses across the country.
