Light pillars happen on very cold, clear evenings when tiny ice crystals form in the atmosphere. Some have compared the imagery to a UFO sighting or "bat signal". The Calgary Eyeopener spoke to University of Calgary physics and astronomy professor Jeroen Stil to find out how they are formed.
