Union Pearson Express: Behind-the-scenes look at new airport route
Metrolinx’s Union Pearson Express will open to travellers in the spring
Toronto’s new airport express train is almost ready for its first batch of travellers, with construction nearly complete.
Travellers will be able to ride Metrolinx’s Union Pearson Express starting this spring.
"At its highest point, [the train] soars 28 metres … in the air. So, there’s beautiful panoramic views of the city," said Kathy Haley, the president of Union Pearson Express.
CBC News got a behind-the-scenes look at the construction. At Pearson International Airport’s terminal one, construction is 99 per cent finished, officials said.
The first two train cars are currently en route to the city, following testing in Chicago.
Torontonians already seem excited about the train’s opening, saying that most other major cities have airport express trains and it’s time Toronto join them.
Toronto’s system has been modelled after those in other cities, like London, England’s Heathrow Express, said Haley.
Shuttles will depart every 15 minutes for the 25-minute journey from Union station to the airport. Trains will stop twice along the way at the Bloor and Weston GO stations.
