A desperate escape
Residents wade through floodwaters with their belongings in Northwest Houston on Wednesday. Harvey struck southeast Texas last Friday, slamming into the coast as a Category 4 hurricane, then weakening to a tropical storm that dumped record amounts of rain, causing dozens of deaths and submerging several neighbourhoods in the Houston area.
The Houston Fire Department began a block-by-block effort Thursday to rescue stranded survivors and recover bodies.

Evacuation centres fill up
People take shelter at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston after flood waters from Harvey inundated the city on Tuesday. The evacuation centre has already received more than 9,000 evacuees, with more arriving.
