A man suspected to have videotaped the murder of American reporter Daniel Pearl has been arrested in Pakistan.

Mohammed Sohail, who has acknowledged being a member of the Islamic militant group Harkat Jihad-e-Islami, was captured on Wednesday.

He and five other people began shooting at police when they were stopped at a checkpoint in Karachi. Solail later fell off his motorcycle while authorities were chasing it.

A Pakistani court has already sentenced Sohail to death in absentia for his role in a 2002 bombing that killed 11 French engineers at Karachi's Sheraton Hotel.

He is also thought to have played a role in the 2002 kidnapping of Pearl, a Wall Street Journal reporter who was researching a story on Islamic militants.

Pearl, 38, was later beheaded in Karachi while a cameraman suspected to be Sohail recorded the action.

A number of people have been arrested over the past two years on suspicion of being involved in the crime.
