Reflections on New York's first gay marriage

The U.S. Supreme Court will begin two days of hearings on Tuesday on same-sex marriage, examining the constitutionality of the federal Defence of Marriage Act and Proposition 8, California's ban on same-sex marriage.

If the California ban is struck down, it could mean that same-sex marriage would be legal across the entire U.S.

A couple of years ago, Kitty Lambert and Cheryle Rudd made history when they became the first same-sex couple to be legally married in the state of New York.

On the stroke of midnight on July 24, 2011, with Niagara Falls roaring behind them, they were pronounced legally married by the mayor of Niagara Falls, N.Y. In the above video, Lambert and Rudd look back at their fight for the right to marry.
