Fidel Castro and fellow rebels hunkered down in a mountain camp in eastern Cuba from roughly 1957 to 1958, with Fulgencio Batista's forces in pursuit.

A steady stream of runners traversed the rugged terrain to deliver supplies, but none gave away Castro's hiding place.

Castro hid, along with his second-in-command Ernesto (Che) Guevara, in the Sierra Maestra mountain range before the revolution toppled the dictator Batista when he fled the island nation at the start of 1959.

CBC's Adrienne Arsenault, who was on assignment in Cuba in March 2015, visited the site of the mountain hideout and filed this report.
