Oscars 2016 nominations prompt concerns about snubs, white-washing
From jabs at The Revenant to concerns about diversity, social media had a lot to say
With The Revenant getting 12 Academy Award nods, The Martian director Ridley Scott and the film Carol both snubbed, and a lack of diversity nominees, Twitter had a lot to talk about when it came to the 2016 Oscar nominations, announced Thursday morning.
Pack leader The Revenant prompted plenty of jokes.
The only thing most people will remember about <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/TheRevenant?src=hash">#TheRevenant</a> in ten years is that <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/LeonardoDiCaprio?src=hash">#LeonardoDiCaprio</a> fought a bear. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/OscarNoms?src=hash">#OscarNoms</a>

Surprised they couldn't find a Best Actress for THE REVENANT. Maybe in the skull pile? <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/OscarNoms?src=hash">#OscarNoms</a>
—@amuredda
Sure he's talented but in The Revenant Leo basically just ate raw bison liver and grew a beard. Men in Brooklyn have been doing that for yrs
—@spkheller
Is The Revenant like The Martian but in the woods?
—@SocialJerkBlog
Despite being nominated six times, The Revenant star Leonardo DiCaprio has yet to win an Oscar.
The internet will explode if Leonardo DiCaprio doesn't win Best Actor 😂 <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/OscarNoms?src=hash">#OscarNoms</a>

—@RebornCake

—@skati_

Fans were outraged that Carol, a film about a love affair between two women in 1950s New York, didn't receive a nod for best picture or best director.
No Direction nomination for CAROL. *throws up everywhere* <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/OscarNoms?src=hash">#OscarNoms</a>
—@emmabung
"This ending made me feel too happy! Let's nominate THE REVENANT instead!" - Oscar voters after seeing CAROL, apparently.
—@alxhuls
they nominated MAD MAX but not carol i'm so confused right now
—@luskywalkers
The Revenant, but it's me surviving the wilderness to get my revenge on the boys who didn't nominate Carol for Best Director.
—@tmibugbee
Another perceived snub was The Martian director Ridley Scott's lack of nomination.
Wow, can't believe they snubbed Ridley Scott <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/OscarNoms?src=hash">#OscarNoms</a>
—@badtoad20
The Academy always snubs comedy directors. That explains Ridley Scott. At least that's what I've been told.
—@Brian_Tallerico
No nomination for Ridley Scott. WTF? I mean, WTF? Why does the academy dislike him?
—@FassFass
Racial diversity among the nominees was another hot topic.
what <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/oscarnoms?src=hash">#oscarnoms</a> looks like to me GENERIC WHITE WOMAN GENERIC WHITE MAN GENERIC WHITE DIRECTOR GENERIC WHITE MOVIE GENERIC WHITENESS
—@isaacosccar
Im not saying those nominated dont deserve it, nor that there should be diversity JUST for the sake of it, but 20 white nominees? <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/OscarNoms?src=hash">#OscarNoms</a>
—@BelaidKL
Is it weird that this old, fat, middle-class white guy is disturbed about the lack of diversity in the <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/OscarNoms?src=hash">#OscarNoms</a>
—@Hugh2D2
Looking for a name of a person of color in these <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/OscarNoms?src=hash">#OscarNoms</a> like <a href="https://t.co/s1tICWjq0K">pic.twitter.com/s1tICWjq0K</a>
