Canadian singer Justin Bieber had an emotional end to his MTV Video Music Awards performance Sunday night.

The 21-year-old pop star sang a medley of songs in his first performance at the show since 2010.

At the end of his performance, which included a voiceover with uplifting messages from Bieber, the singer bowed his head and appeared to cry.

Bieber's fans pointed out that the star has faced some trouble in the past few years. Bieber has gained a bad-boy image with antics and legal woes that led him to embark on a campaign to revamp his image.

To some fans, this performance was a comeback.

It didn't just make him emotional.Β It appears his fans also shed some tears at seeing the star return with a new single, What Do You Mean, to the VMAs stage.

Bieber also debuted a new hairstyle at the awards.

And, while many enjoyed his performance, not everyone was a fan of the new hair.
