Toyota is recalling 58,000 of its Yaris models sold in Canada because of a seatbelt defect, company spokeswoman Dawn Soulis said Wednesday.
The move is part of the recall of 1.3 million vehicles worldwide, including 134,900 Yaris subcompacts sold in the United States in model years 2006 and 2007.
A seatbelt could cause a foam pad in the car to catch fire if the vehicle is involved in a severe front-end collision.
But there have been no reported incidents, Soulis said.
The company is mailing Yaris owners a letter telling them they can take the car in for a free fix of the problem at a dealership, she said.
