Wednesdays with @Kady Replay: Trudeau takes the Liberal reins
What do you think of Justin Trudeau's first days on the job as Liberal leader? Plus: Mark Warawa's sex-selection abortion motion fight is over, but the debate over free speech for Conservative MPs isn't. Replay our live chat with blogger Kady O'Malley.
Plus: Is the backbench dissent in the Tory caucus withering, or growing stronger?
There's always plenty to chat about with Kady O'Malley.
On Wednesdays, CBCNews.ca's Politics blogger convenes a "people's caucus" to discuss and debate the issues of the week.
Featured today:
- Justin Trudeau helmed his first Liberal caucus meeting this morning on Parliament Hill and announced some new critic responsibilities during his post-caucus scrum. He's expected to make major staffing announcements in the near future. What did you think of his speech on Sunday? His interview with Peter Mansbridge? His overall performance in his early days at the wheel?
- Mark Warawa appears to be giving up (at least for now) on his motion about sex-selection abortions, in favour of another private members bill on a different topic. But the Tory backbench grumbling over the larger issue of a MP's freedom of speech seemed to be ramping up, not winding down, with three more Tories voicing support for Warawa's question of privilege – putting Commons Speaker Andrew Scheer in the hot seat to clarify the rights and rules that apply to members statements (SO31s) in the Commons. Was this motion sacrificed in a compromise deal? Did Warawa fold under pressure? Or is something else afoot?
- Democratic Reform Minister Tim Uppal said yesterday that the Harper government's legislation to reform the Elections Act is coming tomorrow. Now today... it's not ready. What's going on? And whenever they do proceed, will it be enough to restore confidence in the system as charges, court cases and fresh allegations continue to surface in the robocall affair?
