Stephen Harper tours Truro as Tom Mulcair shares NDP vision in Surrey
PM Harper in Truro, NDP Leader Tom Mulcair in BC as holiday weekend set to begin
As the clock ticks down to the Victoria Day long weekend — and, for MPs, week-long constituency break — Prime Minister Stephen Harper is set to spend a few more hours in Truro, where he'll join Justice Minister Peter MacKay, AOCA Minister Rob Moore and local MP Scott Armstrong for an announcement at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre
Meanwhile, New Democrat Leader Tom Mulcair continues to crisscross the West Coast, where he's slated to "share his vision for how a New Democrat government will strengthen the middle class across the country" at a Surrey banquet hall this evening.
Also out and about in BC: Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, who will do the honours at a ribbon cutting to mark "the grand re-opening ceremonies for the Pat Bay Visitor's Centre" in North Saanich.
Back in Ottawa, the spring omnibus budget bill, which is now under government-imposed time allocation, will undergo a final round of preliminary debate this morning, with a vote to send it to committee not scheduled to take place until the Chamber reopens for business on May 25.
Later today, Conservative MP James Lunney will present his private members' bid for a national sustainable health care strategy that will focus not just on effectiveness, but cost-effectiveness as well, by "fostering competition for better health care outcomes" and "creating financial incentives for innovation."
Outside the precinct:
- Transport Minister Lisa Raitt heads to Wiarton, where she'll head to the local marina with area MP Larry Miller for the launch of North American Safe Boating Awareness Week.
- Minister of State for FedDev Ontario Gary Goodyear joins a trio of Waterloo MPs to unveil new cash to be divvied up amongst communities throughout Southern Ontario, while Health Minister Rona Ambrose shares her views — and, according to the advisory, some news — on her efforts to combat prescription drug abuse in Canada at a McMaster University forum on prescribing practices
- Treasury Board President Tony Clement delivers fresh federal support for the manufacturing sector during a visit to Seguin-based Crofter's Food Ltd.
- Moving west, both Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq and Canadian Heritage Minister Shelly Glover are scheduled to funding announcements in Winnipeg and Thompson, respectively, and Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification Michelle Rempel brings glad tidings, in the form of a fresh instalment of support for health sciences research, to the University of Saskatchewan.
- Finally, International Trade Minister Ed Fast shows his government's support for Canadian "innovation, job creation and economic growth" during a visit to NovaBioRubber Green Technologies in his home riding of Abbotsford, while Government House Leader Peter Van Loan makes an appearance at the Pacific Forestry Centre in Victoria.
