Jack Layton and Olivia Chow, a political love story
They were a power couple in Canadian politics, two city councillors and MPs as devoted to each other as they were to their causes.
When Jack Layton and Olivia Chow married in 1988, he was a member of Toronto city council and she was a school board trustee. In 1991, Chow was elected to city council in the same election that saw Layton lose his bid to become mayor.
Layton was first elected to Parliament in the 2004 general election, a year after being elected leader of the New Democratic Party. Chow joined him as an MP after winning her seat in the 2006 election.
Chow was by Layton's side when the leader of the Official Opposition and New Democratic Party died in Toronto in the early morning hours of Aug. 22, 2011.
Here’s a look at memorable moments in their partnership.
