Canada's premiers will be invited to talk health care at a working dinner hosted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Friday night in Ottawa following the first ministers meeting on climate, CBC News has learned.

Sources familiar with the plans, who spoke to CBC on condition of anonymity, said the dinner will follow the all-day meeting between the premiers, the prime minister and Indigenous leaders, where the focus will be on finalizing Canada's plan to combat climate change.

News of the working dinner represents a victory of sorts for the premiers, who want more money for health care from the federal government as they deal with the demands of an aging population.

The premiers sent a letter to Trudeau in September, asking him for a commitment to meet on health care before the climate meeting — or to put off changes to the federal government's annual health transfer to provinces and territories for another year.

In a reply to the premiers, Trudeau remained non-committal.
