Canadians have been following the federal election en masse on social media, sharing their thoughts on one of the most dramatic races in years.
Twitter Canada wrote Monday evening that as of 8:15 p.m. ET, the #elxn42 hashtag had been used more than 340,000 times today.
Soon after the polls closed on the East Coast, big gains by the Liberals dominated much of the discussion among political junkies online.
But on a night particularly heavy with sports, entertainment news and other events, there was bound to be some cross-genre discussion.
Liberals make early gains in Atlantic Canada
The Liberals took an early lead in the night, either leading or winning seats in most of Atlantic Canada.
Many noted that the Liberals were on their way to exceeding their entire 2011 results (34 seats) on the East Coast alone. By shortly after 10:30 p.m., CBC News was projecting a Liberal majority government, with the party elected or leading in some 180 ridings.
Did Atlantic Canada vote this way on purpose to make their regional map look like a lobster? <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/passthegarlicbutter?src=hash">#passthegarlicbutter</a> <a href="https://t.co/bPcj7Fyzvc">pic.twitter.com/bPcj7Fyzvc</a>

Seeing that Atlantic Canada map completely red is amazing. 32 seats. That's almost what the Libs had nationwide last time. WOW.

On one hand, the Liberals were always going to do very well in Atlantic Canada so nbd. On other hand, this is going very, very well for them

Dual-screening the election, Jays
But politics wasn't the only hot topic as the Toronto Blue Jays faced the Kansas City Royals in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series.
Twitter Canada noted that many people were tweeting the Jays' hashtag #ComeTogether along with election-related tags, such as #elxn42.
Some posted their two-screen setups from home — the game on one screen, election coverage on the other.
You're not allowed to watch the Blue Jays game unless you vote. Got it? <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ComeTogether?src=hash">#ComeTogether</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/CanadaVotes?src=hash">#CanadaVotes</a>

At least one soul, Toronto Sun columnist Steve Tilley, dared a three-screen setup: the third dedicated to the newly released trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens
It's a triple screen kind of night. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ComeTogether?src=hash">#ComeTogether</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/elxn42?src=hash">#elxn42</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/StarWars?src=hash">#StarWars</a> <a href="https://t.co/SA63epgAff">pic.twitter.com/SA63epgAff</a>
