TIFF wraps up this weekend.
Justin Timberlake was among the stylish stars at TIFF this year, as was Armenian actress Angela Sarafyan, who appears alongside Christian Bale in the love story Promise — a tale set during the Armenian genocide. She turned heads on the film's red carpet premiere in this diaphanous gown. The Toronto International Film Festival wraps up on Sunday.
Swimmer Benoit Huot won his 20th Paralympic medal.
The 32-year-old Quebec swimmer won a bronze medal in the 400-metre freestyle S10 event on Friday — his 20th Paralympics medal to date. The 2016 Rio Paralympic Games are on until Sunday. Below the photo of Huot is Japan's Chiaki Takada competing in the T11 long jump final on Friday. Brazilians Silvania Costa and Lorena Salvatini won the gold and bronze medals in the event respectively.
A wildlife centre in B.C. is rehabilitating injured raptors.
The Orphaned Wildlife rescue centre in Delta, B.C., known as OWL, is receiving an unprecedented number of injured birds of prey at its door — most of them hurt by human activity. There were 626 falcons, hawks, eagles and ospreys, among others, last year and this year some 50 more than that number are expected by the end of 2016.
Typhoon Meranti swept into southeastern China on Thursday.
The typhoon toppled these shipping containers aAfter sweeping across Taiwan, leaving at least two people dead and dozens more injured, the most powerful storm of its kind this year made landfall in China.
The CBC's Sasa Petricic said the storm "hit with a fury" and turned streets into rivers in Beijing, where trees were downed in winds that reached more than 200 km/h.
Pictures of prosperity contrast with hardship in North Korea.
On Tuesday, North Korea's state media outlet released photos of Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un happily inspecting a farm. The photos of prosperity contrast starkly with the picture painted by a UN report released this week in the wake of deadly flooding that will worsen food shortages reported on the Korean Peninsula.
The UN report comes out a week after North Korea's fifth and largest nuclear test, which was celebrated en masse in Kim Il-sung Square, in Pyongyang.
The U.S. pledged to lift sanctions on Myanmar this week.
Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Myanmar (also known as Burma), was in Washington where she met with U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday. During their meeting, Obama pledged to lift the remaining American sanctions on the Southeast Asian country as a reward for moving away from its brutal military past. The efforts of a grassroots group of some 700 commuters went up in underground stations around London this week. The Citizens Advertising Takeover Service (CATS) raised money to buy up advertising space and, for a period of two weeks, is running artworks like these ones, in Clapham Common station, instead of ads.
