Security tight during Euro 2016 soccer tournament
Russia and England threatened with disqualification over fans' bad behaviour
Host nation France has its monuments on lockdown.
France has been on particularly high alert, deploying 90,000 security force members to protect the month-long Euro 2016 soccer tournament, and is still under a state of emergency after the November attacks that killed 130 people. On Monday a 25-year-old Frenchman killed an off-duty police commander and his wife at their suburban home.
Violence spilled into the streets after England vs. Russia match.
Four Russian fans in Lille were arrested before Wednesday's game between Russia and Slovakia, which the Russians lost 2-1, while police used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse English soccer fans near Lille's train station. An officer also confiscated a fan's soccer ball.
UEFA threatened to kick two teams out of the tournament.
UEFA, the governing body of European soccer, warned England and Russia that their teams were facing disqualification if their fans continued to behave poorly, after dozens of people were injured, some badly, in ugly brawls in Marseille on the weekend.
Nationalistic soccer rivalry spilled into global politics.
On Wednesday, Moscow summoned the French ambassador over detentions of Russians at Euro 2016. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov singled out the trampling of a Russian flag and other "provocative actions" as inciting anti-Russian sentiment. UEFA said it would also investigate allegations of what it called "racist behaviour."
Alcohol bans are in place at some locations.
The French interior minister has asked the cities hosting matches to ban the sale and consumption of alcohol in zones where the risk of confrontation was most acute. In Lille, this grocery wrapped its beer sections in plastic.
About 2.5 million spectators are expected.
The Euro 2016 tournament involves 51 soccer matches involving 24 teams in games played at 10 stadiums across France. It wraps up on July 10.
