Pride around the world: Celebration and protest in 2017

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family marched in Canada's largest Pride parade on Sunday in Toronto. He was also joined by Ontario Premiere Kathleen Wynne and Toronto Mayor John Tory.

This year's event is the first since Pride Toronto banned uniformed officers from marching in the parade following last year's demonstration by Black Lives Matter, who held up the event and demanded the exclusion of uniformed officers from future events.

Other revellers were decked out in rainbow colours. 

Parliament Hill Pride

The Transgender Pride, Pride and Canada 150 Pride flags flew after a ceremony on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on June 14, 2017. It is just one of the Pride festivities occurring across the country this year.  

Edmonton Pride

Edmonton's 37th Pride parade, held on June 10, included Alberta Premier Rachel Notley and Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan (not seen here). The leaders of the province's two right-wing political parties both said they would not attend the event because of scheduling.

Canada's Pride events have been peaceful affairs so far this year, but not all countries have been so fortunate.

Burning up in Kyiv

Anti-LGBT protesters burned a Pride flag during the opening ceremony of Kyiv Pride 2017 in Kyiv, Ukraine, on June 13. Riot police stood guard during the event and blocked anti-LGBT demonstrators from reaching the parade.

Ukrainian anti-LGBT activists later attempted to block an LGBT parade in downtown Kyiv on June 18. The march was mostly incident-free, although around 200 people protested, calling it an affront to traditional values and to soldiers fighting pro-Russian separatist rebels in the eastern Donbass region.

Resist March

The annual Pride Parade in Los Angeles, Calif., was replaced by a Resist March this year. Demonstrators marched on June 11 in protest of President Donald Trump's administration.

Khuong Lam, 35, posed for a portrait during the Resist March.  "What are you doing? What have you done to our country? I love this country," Lam told Reuters.

Hot in Lisbon

A participant shouted slogans during the 18th Lisbon Gay Pride Parade in Lisbon, Portugal, on June 17. About 1,000 people braved temperatures of up to 40 C to march in the parade, the Associated Press reported.

Greek pride

Members of extreme-right parties clashed with riot police in Thessaloniki, Greece, during a protest against the 6th annual Gay Pride march on June 17.

Big crowd 

Tens of thousands of revellers packed the streets of Tel Aviv, Israel, for the annual Pride parade on June 9. 

Tear gas and detentions in Istanbul

The governor of Istanbul banned this year's pride parade. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowds and activists said plastic bullets were used. Turkey's official Anadolu news agency said "an estimated 20 people" were detained. The woman in the photo below was one of several people detained on June 25.

At least a hundred protesters gathered in a nearby neighbourhood, beating drums and chanting slogans. Gamze Öztürk, 23, showed her pride on Sunday.

The governor also banned last year's pride parade. In the photo below, a person waves a rainbow flag in front of an Istanbul courthouse on June 19 in support of 11 LGBT activists who appeared on trial for marching during last year's Gay Pride parade. The charges against them were dropped.

Sao Paulo pride

Revellers held posters depicting United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin as they marched during the annual Gay Pride Parade in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on June 18. The sign on the right reads "Dictatorship 2018?" in Portuguese. 

Slovenian pride

A man smiled during the Ljubljana Pride Parade in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on June 17. The Ljubljana Pride Parade has been an annual event since 2001.
