'Wedding Crashers' tops MTV Movie Awards

2005 comedy 'The Wedding Crashers' took home three awards at the MTV Movie Awards: best movie, best onscreen team (Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson" and breakthrough performance honours for co-star Isla Fisher.

The summer comedy Wedding Crashers became the toast of the 2006 MTV Movie Awards, collecting three prizes including best movie.

The gala in Culver City, Calif., onSaturday night also bestowed the movie's stars, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, with the best onscreen team prize and breakthrough performance honours for co-star Isla Fisher.

The winners are selected by the public.

The awards are meant to be light and breezy with prizes recognizing such categories asbest villain, onscreen fight andsexiest performance.

Host Jessica Alba appeared in several skits parodying the likes of The Da Vinci Code and King Kong.

"It was a lot of work," said the actress, who took home a Golden Popcorn award for her sexy turn as a stripper in Sin City.

The gay cowboy flick Brokeback Mountain also brought home several trophies, including best performance for lead actor Jake Gyllenhaal, and best kiss for Gyllenhaal and his co-star Heath Ledger.

"This is a real honor, not just for me and Heath but for all of you, that you picked this movie and this kiss over all the other ones," Gyllenhaal said in his acceptance speech.

Some of the other winners included:

  • Comedic performance: Steve Carell, The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
  • Villain: Hayden Christensen, Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith.
  • Hero: Christian Bale, Batman Begins.
  • Fight: Angelina Jolie vs. Brad Pitt, Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
  • Frightened performance: Jennifer Carpenter, The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
  • Silver Bucket of Excellence: Spike Lee, Do the Right Thing.

"Gandhi and the Dalai Lama, if I had any familiarity with your teachings, I would not be the person I am today," Carell said.

Comedian Will Ferrell presented Jim Carrey with the MTV Generation Award for his body of work, which includes Fun with Dick and Jane, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show and Dumb and Dumber.

"This man's versatility makes Thomas Jefferson look like a big fat idiot," intoned Ferrell.

Carrey, in an all-white suit, accepted the prize with a posse of winged angels. He did a brief hip-gyrating dance with Ferrell.

"Why do so many struggle with fame when I am able to float effortlessly on the upper edges of the Hollywood statusphere'?" joked Carrey.
