American director David Fincher's take on the literary phenomenon The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is one of the season's highest-profile films.

The first instalment of an English-language, three-film retelling of Stieg Larsson’s bestselling Millennium Trilogy, Dragon Tattoo has generated buzz at every step, from the casting of Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara as disgraced journalist Mikael Blomqvist and brilliant hacker Lisbeth Salander, respectively, to details about the blistering soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

A recent kerfuffle over a major U.S. film critic's decision to break tradition and post an early review of the movie has also kept the R-rated thriller in the headlines.

CBC's Eli Glasner looks at whether the much-anticipated film, opening Tuesday, lives up to the hype.
