The Hunger Games plays it safe

Eli Glasner finds the film version has some fine performances but stops short of depicting the violence of the bestselling books.

The film version of bestselling book The Hunger Games has some fine performances, including Stanley Tucci as a reality show host, Jennifer Lawrence as the heroine Katniss and Donald Sutherland as the evil president.

Set in a dystopian America where teens are chosen by lottery to appear in the Hunger Games, with only one survivor to emerge, The Hunger Games has a huge following because of the popularity of the young adult books by Suzanne Collins.

CBC reviewer Eli Glasner says the film is dark but stops short of depicting the violence of the bestselling novels.
