Spice Girls hint at long-awaited reunion, but without Mel C. or Victoria Beckham

On the 20th anniversary of the Spice Girls's hit debut single Wannabe, three members of 1990s girl group have dropped major hints about hosting an official reunion as a "big thank you" to fans for standing by them. 

The trio — Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) and Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) — declare they have "the best fans" in a video message posted on a newly created website spicegirlsgem.com. 

"We want to celebrate and have a party," Brown teases. "And when we do..."

"You're all invited!" exclaim the three performers, now in their 40s.

Both the website's URL and YouTube account name suggest that a forthcoming group would be called GEM (denoting the first initial of each member).

There is no mention of the other two original Spice Girls: Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) and Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice). 

Since the pop group's indefinite hiatus in 2000, Beckham has become a style icon, focusing on her fashion empire and raising four children with soccer-star husband David Beckham.

Meanwhile, Chisholm has concentrated on her solo singing career, releasing six studio albums between 1999 and 2012. She also runs her own record label, Red Girl Records.

The entire group last performed together for the closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympics in London and conducted an abbreviated reunion tour in late 2007 and early 2008.

An upbeat remake

This week, the Spice Girls' track Wannabe also inspired a celebrity-backed music video remake for Global Goals, a campaign that shines a light on issues affecting women, from domestic violence to the gender pay gap.

The video has been viewed over 770,000 times on YouTube and was also been applauded and shared on social media by original Spice Girls Beckham and Chisholm, who have not completely distanced themselves from their former personas.
