Shania Twain talks about turning 50, an age which coincides with new confidence and a new album and tour.

Canadian singer Shania Twain says she's embracing the fact that she just turned 50 this year.

"That sounds a little trite actually – everyone says that don't they – but really I am. I really feel like I've earned something that I didn't have even five years ago," she said to The National's Ian Hanomansing.

The singer is marking her birthday with another milestone – she's embarking on her first tour in more than a decade.

She says she still gets nervous before she goes on stage.

"It's not like success erased my insecurities. I still am who I am at the core," she said. "You know what, fame and money doesn't fix everything."

Twain says with experience, she's gotten over her shyness and has also regained her voice.
