Popular character actor and Hellboy star Ron Perlman is the latest star to join Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the upcoming film series that delves back into the wizarding world created by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.

Perlman, 65, is reportedly set to play a goblin, according to industry publication The Hollywood Reporter.

The classically trained actor with an unmistakable baritone is among Hollywood's most recognizable faces and prolific performers: Perlman's career spans more than 150 credits across film, television, video games and theatre.

Perlman is perhaps best known for his starring role in the Hellboy films, as well as classic late-80s TV series Beauty and the Beast. (Warner Bros. Pictures)

Recently seen in the film Stonewall as well as in the drama series Hand of God and Sons of Anarchy, Perlman is perhaps best known for his memorable turn as the title character of the Hellboy films as well as Vincent on TV's Beauty and the Beast during the late 1980s.

Fantastic Beasts is currently filming in England, with Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne in the lead role as Newt Scamander.

Other actors set to appear in Fantastic Beasts include Jon Voight, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton and Ezra Miller.

Scamander is described by Rowling as the world's preeminent magizoologist (the study of magical creatures), with the film set 70 years before the Harry Potter saga. The teenaged Harry and his Hogwarts classmates are required to read Scamander's textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as part of their school studies.

The first of a planned trilogy, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set to hit theatres Nov. 18, 2016.
