Television coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics in vancouver scored six Geminis at an industry gala celebrating the best in news, sports, documentary and lifestyles television.

Television coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver scored six Geminis at an industry gala celebrating the best in news, sports, documentary and lifestyles television.

The trophies were handed out at a private bash in Toronto on Tuesday that named coverage of the Games that was led by CTV the best live sporting event of the year.

Olympic-related awards also went to:

  • Catriona Le May Doan, for best sports analyst.
  • Chris Cuthbert, who claimed best play-by-play for his take on the men's gold-medal hockey game won by Canada.
  • James Duthie, for best sportscaster.

Other winners Tuesday included:

  • HGTV's Sarah Richardson, best lifestyle host for Sarah's House.
  • CBC'S George Stroumboulopoulos, (best talk-show host for The Hour.
  • Amanda Lang, best news host for CBC News' The Lang & O'Leary Exchange.

W Network's How to Look Good Naked Canada was named best lifestyle series, Viva's Tosca: Flexing at 49 earned best human interest series, and Discovery Channel's Licence to Drill was named best documentary series.

News winners included CBC's Diana Swain for best anchor, News Hour-Global BC for best local newscast in a large market and CBC News Ottawa for best local news in a small market.

In June 2006, CTV News announced it would no longer participate in the Gemini Awards, saying the time involved in preparing entries for the prizes was not worth the trouble.

The Gemini gala for children's and youth programming, as well as for variety and comedy winners will be held Wednesday.

The ceremonies precede a televised gala that will take place Nov. 13 in Toronto and will be broadcast on Global and Showcase.

Leading nominees include CTV's cop drama Flashpoint, the CBC miniseries Guns and The Summit, HBO Canada's Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures and Space's Stargate Universe.
