O'Donnell to return to daytime on 'The View'

Actress Rosie O'Donnell, the award-winning former talk show host, is reportedly set to return to daytime TV as the replacement for Meredith Vieira on The View.

Actress Rosie O'Donnell, the award-winning former talk show host, is reportedly set to return to daytime TV as the replacement for Meredith Vieira on The View.

U.S. entertainment TV program Extra reported O'Donnell's appointment Thursday and it was confirmed to the Associated Press by a person close to the show.

The news is expected to be announced on Friday's episode of The View.

A game of musical chairs has been playing out in U.S. TV after longtime morning show host Katie Couric recently announced she was leaving NBC's Today to join CBS as the anchor for the CBS Evening News.

NBC then announced that former journalist Meredith Vieira would take Couric's place.

Vieira had been one of the multiple hosts on ABC's The View, which was created by Barbara Walters. She was also the host of Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

In the late 1990s, O'Donnell had a hit syndicated talk show on air and in six years won six Daytime Emmy Awards for best talk show host. She left the show to focus on raising a family.

O'Donnell has also starred in film and on stage, including the movie A League of Their Own and the Broadway musicals Grease and Fiddler on the Roof.
