Nicole Richie arrested for suspected DUI

Noted socialite and sometime television star Nicole Richie was arrested early Monday in Los Angeles for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to authorities.

California Highway Patrol officers took the reality-TV star, 25, intocustody after she failed a field sobriety test,police spokesmanTodd Workman said.

Authorities said they received 911 calls about a vehicle going the wrong way on California State Highway 134 before officers arrived to find Richie's black Mercedes sport utility vehicle, which matched callers' descriptions, stopped in the carpool lane of the freeway.

Richie, a star of the reality series The Simple Life and daughter of pop singer Lionel Richie, was booked, tested for drugs and released later Monday morning, said Workman, who added that the results of the test hadn't been determined.

In February 2003 Richie was arrested in California and charged with heroin possession. She subsequently entered a drug rehabilitation centre.

Richie's Simple Life co-star Paris Hilton was charged in September with driving under the influence.
